Brunswick goes for Clinton
Brunswick County voters bucked the winning trend in the Democrat’s presidential preference and in state primary races for the GOP’s governor nominee and the Democrat’s hopeful for N.C. treasurer.
Barack Obama’s decisive, 15-percent win in North Carolina over Hillary Clinton contrasted with the choice of Brunswick voters, who picked Clinton by a margin of 11 percent.
Brunswick voters in the Republican race for governor favored Fred Smith by 11 points over Pat McCrory, but McCrory won his party’s nomination by about a 10-percent margin overall.
Brunswick Democratic voters also swam against the tide in
the race for state treasurer, picking David Young by a 3-percent margin over Janet Cowell. Statewide, Cowell took the nomination by about 11 points.
Turnout was strong locally – 34 percent – and statewide, with 36 percent of the electorate casting ballots.
The majority of local voters picked candidates who also prevailed statewide in many other races.
Democrat Kay Hagan garnered 60 percent of the N.C. vote in a five-way race for the U.S. Senate nod, while 56 percent of Brunswick Democrats supported her. Hagan will face incumbent Elizabeth Dole, who trounced fellow Republican Pete Di Lauro with 90 percent of the N.C. vote. Sixteen percent of local Republicans favored Dole’s GOP opponent.
Tar Heel Democrats tossed gubernatorial hopeful Bev Perdue 56 percent of the vote, while Brunswick partisans offered her 53 percent of the vote against Richard Moore.
Local and state support for Democrat lieutenant governor candidate Walter Dalton was 45 percent in the four-way race he won.
On the GOP side, 59 percent of Brunswick and N.C. partisans picked Robert Pittenger for the ballot for lieutenant governor.
